As dawn spread its warm fingertips across the lightening sky, a cat rose to meet it.
He stretched lightly as to not disturb the slumbering warriors around him, claws digging into the packed earth beneath him. He stepped carefully over his fellow felines, strolling from the den in silence. He took note of the few warriors that were missing on patrol, and then headed out to get some early hunting done.
His ear flicked as the lyrics of birdsong flowed into them. He inhaled the morning air as he moved out into the waving grass, icy gaze sweeping over the rippling sea of gold. The cream tom paused, taking a moment to lick at the dew that still clung to the gently moving blades, knowing that in about an hour that even this would not be immediately available during his endeavors. Moving on, he set one paw in front of the other as he headed deeper into the hills, his senses becoming hyper-aware as he slipped into his hunting mode. He moved like a ghost through the grass, dew clinging to his pelt and making it glisten in the increasing light as he prowled.
Jaystorm was a cat of bulkier build than most of his Clan; what he lacked in speed, he made up for in muscle. Unfortunately, this meant he could not engage in a high-speed chase after a fleet-footed rabbit. He had to rely on the element of surprise, or else he had no chance. Hunting early gave him an advantage; while his prey's movements were slowed by grogginess, he was a wide-awake being that favored mornings. He paused, blinking as he examined his surroundings, and then lowered himself to the ground, and waited.
His nontraditional method of hunting soon proved to work quite well for him. The smell of the sweet dew and the thickness of the rolling heather hid his scent and veiled him from his prey's view. Jaystorm relied on his hearing to locate his prey, and it was as his ears turned behind him that the whispers of fur on grass met his ears.
There.

The soft rustling of a cat beginning to wake up would interrupt the silence that rested on the River Clan apprentice den so early. It wasn't a normal occurrence for Rookpaw to wake so early in the day. Normally, he enjoyed being able to sleep in, but today it seemed his time to wake would be far earlier than he'd like. Groggily, the young cat would sit up and glance around. All of his other clanmates were still slumbering peacefully, and the apprentice would have gladly joined them, but once he was up, he was up for good.
Silently, and carefully, he would weave his way out of the den trying his best not to disturb the cats who wanted to sleep in. Once out of the den, Rookpaw would meticulously clean his fur making sure that it was nice and clean before glancing around the camp and really taking in the morning. He seemed to be the only cat sitting around, as was to be expected. Now that he had time to take note of the sun, it was obvious that the only ones who would be awake at this time was those who had to.
Yawning lightly, the young tom would stand before stretching out his muscles and waking himself up. With all the other cats slumbering peacefully, it proved to be the perfect time to get a little exercise outside of camp. So long as his little endeavor didn't take too long no harm could come from it. With that, he would end his stretching and bounded out of the camp. He had no specific place in mind, he only wanted to stretch out and get a nice little work out before the sun rose too high and became unbearably hot. It would be even worse for him thanks to the color of his pelt.
Rookpaw eventually slowed to a walk and simply basked in the morning. While it was a hassle to wake up so early, it was most certainly worth it. The sun always cast a wonderful light in the morning. Inhaling deeply, the apprentice had the urge to lay down and take a nap. Not only did the fact that he planned to return to the camp soon deter him from following through with that, but there was also the fact that the sound of racing paws reached his ears. It was too late for him by the time he heard it. The young tom was no match for the much older Wind Clan warrior and was easily pinned to the ground. Rookpaw's immediate reaction was to close his eyes and nervously sputter the words. "D-Don't hurt me!" It was pitiful, but all that he could manage so early in the day.

Jaystorm didn't realize it was a cat until he had him pinned. He tensed, scrutinizing the young tom with his light azure eyes, lids falling slightly as he narrowed his gaze. He grasped for the name of the cat, whom he was sure was an apprentice. After a moment of staring hard at the younger feline, he let him up. He shook the glistening dew from his short-haired fur.
"Rookpaw," he said gently. As he opened his mouth to speak the name, it came to him, lips forming unexpected syllables. He had learned most of the RiverClan cat's names. Well, he had heard most of them. Jaystorm wasn't the best with names, but he had just gotten remotely lucky this time around. His gaze had now softened and a slight smile generously graced his countenance. He sniffed a bit at the cat's sense, storing it in his memory as he withdrew another step.
"I apologize, I was in a bit... in the zone," he explained, a slight chuckle accompanying his words. Whenever Jaystorm committed himself to one task, he had the tendency to disregard everything else around him except for whatever he was after. He turned his eyes away and to the rising sun, the fiery orb reflecting in his eyes as it peaked over the hill. He flicked his tail. An instinctual sense of discomfort made its presence well known in his mind at the close proximity of a RiverClan cat, but he pushed it away, inwardly scoffing at such ridiculous inner workings. His ears tipped backward at the slightest as he remembered his beloved sister, but it was merely a flick of his auds as he pushed the terrible memories away, and then returned his gaze to the cat beside him as to not miss any words that were spoken.

Rookpaw remained with his eyes closed, expecting to feel the sting of fangs piercing his skin, but the feeling never came. The apprentice would flinch slightly when he felt movement, and was surprised when it was the movement of his attacker getting off of him. Nervously, he would open his eyes to see the tom that had pinned him down shaking dew off. He had to admit that it was a rather dashing sight, though he quickly pushed such thoughts from his mind. Unlike the other cat, Rookpaw had no idea who this other cat was, and worried it might be a loner or something like that.
When the tom spoke his name, Rookpaw was surprised. he wondered if he was supposed to know this cat... He was sure it wasn't a River Clan cat so... It must have been a Wind Clan cat, probably a warrior from the looks of it. Feeling the need to regain his meager honor at this realization, the younger tom would get himself up before shaking himself off. While he wanted to stand tall in front of a cat from another clan, he could feel the bits of grass and such that still clung to his pelt. He desperately wanted to clean himself, but he resisted.
"It's alright." he said lamely, shifting on his paws a bit. He wasn't sure what else to say to this cat, and tried to avoid looking at him. Only a moment would pass before Rookpaw turned his head to speak to the cat directly. He was taken for a moment by the fact that the other cat seemed intent on listening to what he had to say. It wasn't really something he expected. "Uh... You know my name, so what's yours?" As soon as he asked the question, he hated himself. He'd wanted to sound tough, but it ended up sounding so lame... Ugh. The young tom's tail would droop slightly at this thought, and he would glance away from the older cat once more.

He examined the demeanor of the opposing tom curiously, genuinely amused by this RiverClan cat's behavior. As words slipped from the apprentice's lips, Jaystorm noticed that he seemed to be disappointed in himself. The lyrics seemed to hold a sort of timid impression, but the WindClan warrior took note of the fact that it seemed that he had wanted a different feel to his words. He dismissed this, and went about normally, acting as if Rookpaw's words had held respectable power as to not embarrass the younger individual.
"My name is Jaystorm," he greeted, nodding his head politely to the other cat, front legs bending very slightly as he tipped his upper body downward in what could be mistaken for an extremely minuscule bow. He kept his intent vague, though, leaving the meaning of the gesture to the apprentice's imagination. "Don't worry, I just tend to pay attention to your Clan a bit more than others. Though I'm quite lucky that I even remembered it. I wouldn't remember the names of some cats even if the memory came up in my mind and bit me on the tail," he added lightheartedly. Jaystorm was a very relaxed, humorous individual that was comfortable around most everybody. He was very friendly toward pretty much anyone he met, too. Well, that was, those in WindClan and RiverClan. He didn't have patience for ShadowClan, and would idly tolerate ThunderClan. He glanced about, eyes training behind Rookpaw for a moment before turning away upon not finding anything.
"Where is your mentor?" he asked curiously, smiling.

The apprentice was surprised slightly with the way that the older tom had greeted. Did he mean to bow? If he did why would he do that for an apprentice of another clan? Rookpaw's thoughts drifted slightly as he wondered why the other cat, Jaystorm, did that. There was no reason for him to do so. After all, Rookpaw hadn't done anything impressive. He'd only acted the part of a weakling...The Siamese tom had continued to say something, but he was deep in his thoughts and not nearly as attentive as his company had been. Rookpaw was only pulled from his thoughts when the other cat asked about his mentor. "He was on the dawn patrol this morning." he answered, the other cats actions had calmed him slightly, so he managed to get his words out without stuttering this time.
Rookpaw had yet to gain enough confidence to continue the conversation on his own though. He simply waited on the other cat to continue on the conversation. Normally, it would have been simple for him to chat and be merry, but the circumstances were different from talking with his other friends. He tried to reassure himself that it was no big deal that he got flustered over getting pounced by a cat from another clan. They weren't at war or anything... so it was fine perfectly fine. The young cat had the intense urge to sigh, but he simply glanced around at the surroundings, hoping that they could part soon, and that this embarrassment could be behind him.

Ah, the morning patrol. I'll have to see if they need anyone for it tomorrow... he thought idly, smiling. He examined the apprentice, his thoughts leading back to hunting.
"Hey, you're a RiverClan cat," he said. It was, of course, a very stupid statement. He paused momentarily before going on, the awkwardness of the phrase fading very quickly as he explained himself. "You know how to swim... do you think that you could teach me?" he inquired, ears pushing forward and his slight smile widening. "Well, you may have noticed that I'm not as... well..." He glanced down at his figure, frowning. "I'm not exactly built like a sleek WindClan cat. I can't chase a rabbit... so do you think you can teach me how to fish, too?" he questioned. He didn't at all expect for his offer to be accepted. He had just met this cat and it wasn't like RiverClan went around teaching every cat how to swim. He was silent for a moment, and then apologized. "I'm sorry, that was probably a stupid request," he said with a sigh, shaking his head. "I guess I'll leave you to do whatever you were doing." He turned away, cursing himself.
Stupid, stupid... That was such a stupid question. Besides, most of RiverClan probably hate water now! What if he lost someone because of the flood? And to ask him to teach me how to maneuver the thing that's brought such disaster upon his Clan? StarClan, that was stupid...

When the other cat stated that he was a RiverClan cat, Rookpaw's confidence rose slightly. So even warriors like him could say something stupid like that, but unlike himself, the other managed to recover from it much more quickly, which caused that confidence to fade slightly. The apprentice would listen as the other asked if he could teach them to swim. The apprentices first thought was how could this cat ask him something like that? WindClan had their speed, and RiverClan had their swimming. It wasn't hard to swim, but still... it was what made RiverClan, RiverClan. He couldn't just go around teaching willy nilly.
As the warrior turned away, he was relieved. Their encounter was over, and he wouldn't have to think about his embarrassment any more, but then... he started thinking about it. He'd just been asked by a warrior, whom over took him, to teach him something that he didn't know how to do. StarClan had obviously given him a way to redeem himself for his early folly. "W-Wait!" he'd said quickly before the other cat could get too far away. "I'll teach you." he'd add after a moments pause. It would be fine to teach this one cat. "It's not all that hard, I'm surprised every cat doesn't know how to swim." Rookpaw tried to make himself sound high and mighty, but it fell a bit short. He honestly wasn't the type of cat to try and hold himself above another cat, but it was worth a shot right?

At the outburst telling him to wait, Jaystorm paused, paw hovering in mid-air as he turned his ears backwards toward the apprentice, listening. His whiskers quivered slightly as his nose twitched, amusement flicking through his mind.
"I know I offered, but I didn't think you'd accept," he said, still a bit stunned. "And I don't want you to get in trouble with your Clan..." This second thought now happened upon his mind, and he was now a bit concerned that if they actually went through with this, the RiverClan apprentice would be ridiculed. He lowered his head slightly as he turned around, ears tipping back. The tom lowered himself to his stomach, looking at the ground, gears of his mind turning as he attempted to figure out how to either back out of the situation or make it work. He had pretty much flattened himself to the ground, so he had to look up slightly at the apprentice. It wasn't much, though; he was just barely shorter than the other cat with how large he was.
This apprentice had something that Jaystorm wanted, so he might as well make this easy on his new 'teacher' as possible. He pondered over the possibilities, turning his gaze downward once more, ears pressing forward thoughtfully.
"Oh, in return... Uh, hm..." he mumbled, then spoke up as he continued. "I can show you the best way to chase down a rabbit? I'm not too good at it myself, but I can tell you what to do when chasing them to make it easier. It's not much, but I don't have anything else to offer." He examined Rookpaw. From how sleek the cat was, it seemed like they would have opposite fighting styles, as well. "And maybe we could spar? No claws, of course. Knowing how to take down a larger cat could be helpful to you."
It's so strange. It's like our body types should belong to the opposite Clan, he mused. He averted his line of sight, though, realizing it had remained trained on the feline for a bit longer than he had intended.

When the other cat spoke, he realized that his little outburst of wanting to seem strong, and showing that he could be good at something, could get him into some trouble with his clan, but now that he'd said it, he had to follow through with it. Maybe Jaystorm would change his mind and it would be alright... Then the other cat turned and it was obvious that Rookpaw had to follow through. He felt nervous, because of the possibility, but the nervousness faded when the older cat lowered his himself to the ground. It wasn't something he was used too, so the apprentice looked away, his embarrassment showing in the way his ears folded back slightly. After a moment he'd glance back. Even laying down, the other cat wasn't much shorter than him, it was quite intimidating. "I'll only get in trouble if someone finds out." he'd say. The timing was a bit late and lost a bit of the strength that had been intended, like most of the things the apprentice tried to say.
Jaystorm seemed to be trying to think, so after that sentence Rookpaw busied himself by plopping his bum down and sitting. When the other cat spoke, the younger cat was taken by surprise a bit when the words started out as a mumble. Then when he continued on to explain that he'd teach him the best way to hunt down rabbits, a feeling that Rookpaw couldn't quite name swelled up in his chest. It was one thing to ask someone to take a risk to do something for you, but another to offer something risky in return. After a moments thought, he realized the feeling must be respect. That was the only answer. "That seems like a fair trade." he'd say with a nod. The thought of sparring with the older cat was intimidating due to his size, but he couldn't show weakness. He was just an apprentice, still learning, so he had an excuse if he failed miserably. Anyway, he could impress his mentor if he learned a thing or two from Jaystorm. "I suppose we'll start with swimming?" he'd ask a bit lamely. "We'll need some water for that..." He'd glance around looking for the nearest body of water.

He smirked at the apprentice's reply. "I like the way you think," he said, nodding. Besides, it wasn't like he was doing a wrong against his Clan. In fact, swimming and fishing could help his Clan. Sure, teaching this cat how to take down a larger cat might be a bit edgy, but there weren't many 'larger cats' in WindClan. It wasn't like it could be used against them if a war broke out. To Jaystorm, nothing was really wrong about this situation.
"Not the lake," he said immediately as the problem as to where they were to begin the teaching arose. The speed at which he had said it made it hard to understand, though. "Not the lake..." he repeated, more slowly, staring at the ground. A silent sigh slipped past his lips, and he shook his head. "I was thinking the far eastern part of the river?" he suggested. "Patrols don't go there often, as there's not much that really goes on." It would only take them a minute or two to get there if they sprinted. Jaystorm was certain that he could keep up with an apprentice, no matter how sleek. Well, he was almost certain.
Excitement pulsed through Jaystorm. He didn't like the lake, but was perfectly fine with swimming and fishing in any other body of water. He would be wary and aware of the current, yes. He would probably squeal like a kit the moment he lost his footing, yes. He would probably act like he was drowning in three-mousestep-tall water, yes. But he would learn how to swim, somehow. He was built like a RiverClan cat and was sure he could do this. Besides, from the way Rookpaw acted, it was as easy as breathing. Normally he wouldn't trust an apprentice with that, but it was a RiverClan apprentice. These cats practically lived in water.
Okay, that was a really cruel thing to think, he pointed out in his mind as he thought of most of their territory being underwater. He hadn't meant it with such intent, but cursed himself for being so thoughtless. Had that been a spoken comment, he would be in deep water. I mean... mousedung.

When the older cat praised him, Rookpaw couldn't help but smile. He tried to hide it, of course, but he failed miserably. Out of embarrassment he would turn his head to the side. He wasn't quite sure why he was embarrassed, but he was. He reasoned that it was probably, because the praise was coming from a cat from another clan. The apprentices' embarrassment would fade when the other cat spoke up. The first time around, he didn't hear what Jaystorm said. When the warrior spoke more clearly, Rookpaw would turn his head back to look at the other tom. "Of course not..." he would say quietly.
The black tom felt considerably more awkward as the conversation continued. This time, because of the fact that the lake was brought up, and not something silly. Once the lake was brought up, it was hard to get his mind off of it. "Sounds good." he'd reply when Jaystorm was done explaining where to go. The younger cats' tone was considerably weaker, he didn't even try to sound strong. While he wasn't afraid of water or swimming, he was terrified of the lake. Rivers and things... they were fine. He grew up in them, but that single monster swallowed up his kin. It was understandable.
He would take a slow breath before speaking up again. "Well... I guess we should go then." He didn't waste any time, and started heading off towards the east. When the WindClan warrior followed, he would pick up his pace and hurry along. Focusing on the destination kept his mind off of the lake. The silence would be deafening, but he was busy focusing on the destination. So long as the other cat didn't attempt to speak, Rookpaw would continue the whole way in silence. Even if their trip went smoothly, he wouldn't exactly be sure of what to do. While he wanted to seem strong, he didn't exactly feel comfortable treating an older cat like a kit. The lessons he learned had been when he was a young cat, so the lessons he knew were geared to that age group, not a warrior's age. Hopefully, Jaystorm wouldn't take offense.

Jaystorm followed the tom closely, gaze turning about as he kept an eye out for any other cat. Luckily, though, their trip went unaccompanied and undetected, and soon they were met by the sound of running water.
The warrior moved cautiously ahead, peering over the lip of the slight drop. It wasn't much, maybe a half foot or so, but he couldn't help but suddenly be apprehensive about this whole thing. He lowered himself to the ground, legs pulled closely toward him as he dipped his tongue into the water, realizing that he was suddenly thirsty. As he drank, he realized how cold the water was and flinched, though it wasn't too visible.
Oh, what am I thinking? he ridiculed himself. I can do this! I can't just act like a kit in front of this apprentice... I'm a WindClan warrior! I totally got this! His self-confidence boosted, he sat up straight and glared defiantly at the water, and then softened his gaze as he glanced over at the Rookpaw.
"So, what first, mentor?" he inquired, the last word of his question playful and tinged with a polite hue of respect, a flashing the apprentice a dashing smile. This whole situation put him in a good mood, somehow.
